Garden Bounty

I never thought I would ever garden.  EVER!  I never expected to have any interest.  Then I found the farmers markets and the community supported agriculture cooperatives and thought that I could do this myself to supplement any purchases from the markets.  I don't grow everything, nor do I expect to, but things we have grown have been put to good use.

This is what our garden looked like this year before weeds overtook it and made it look like a jungle.  In fact, I think I heard drums on some evenings from the wee folk who may have moved in and made it home.

What we planted (an "X" next to an item indicates that it did not grow or did now grow well enough for us to eat it):

  • carrots
  • turnips
  • beets
  • lettuces
  • peas X
  • beans X
  • radishes
  • garlic
  • onions X
  • tomatoes
  • brussels sprouts X
  • broccoli
  • cauliflower X
  • red and green cabbage
  • eggplant X
  • watermelon X
  • cantaloupe X
  • hot and sweet peppers
  • zucchini and yellow squash

It looks like quite a few Xs, but I assure you sometimes this happens.  That's why we have Tops and Wegmans and the farmers markets.

What we canned/froze:

  • froze: strawberries, blueberries, rhubarb, grilled corn off the cob, sauerkraut
  • jams: peach, strawberry rhubarb, strawberry (sauce), black raspberry, blackberry
  • peach chutney
  • dill and bread and butter pickles
  • zucchini and squash relishes
  • salsa
  • tomatoes
My husband comes from hearty farm stock people.  He told me that you don't plant certain things from seeds unless you do it early in the year in your living room.  These plants - red and green cabbage, brussels sprouts, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower - were purchased from a local nursery and put in our garden.  As a note, our St. Bernard made off with one of the plants.  She loves vegetables!
Before anything started to grow.  We had just planted the seeds and the seedlings.

This is garlic my husband planted late last season.  I don't think we ever got any garlic from it.

While the garden still looks weeded.  Note all the lettuce growing in the middle.  We ate salads for weeks with the wonderful mesclun mixes and fun lettuces.

Our first canned goods!  We screwed one up.  The strawberry rhubarb jam was jam, but the strawberry "jam" was strawberry sauce.  It tastes fabulous on ice cream!

Other jams we canned over the course of the season.
